The Dream Castle

Tableau, 1979

You can either understand people’s reactions from a number of material and concrete conditions, or from their “psychology”, their psyche. I think that by talking to others about the material conditions “psyche” will reveal itself through their material choices, on the contrary in a conversation based on psyche, a psychological conversation, nothing or very little is revealed about the materiale circumstances, because such conversation will often lack a common reference, be marked by misunderstandings and quickly results in banalities. Therefore I loathe that kind of conversatin, we can also ask if our actions are expressions of bure being i.e. like the cow chewing the cud, like the trail of the ants across the forest path, or does our being have a higher moral end. The question may seem old fashioned, but if you are politically engaged you have basically taken some moral choices that again imply that you have assumed that something is good and something evil and this implicitly involves a higher instance that judges which is which.
